Gallery Chat: Michael Arcega on installation and The Enchanted Island

“On his way to blow the shofar in the Holy Land, Rabbi Wolf Kitzes finds himself in a mansion and discovers a long table. He is given the choice between blowing the shofar or eating a meal from the horn of plenty. Choosing the latter, he comes back home and realizes that he missed the opportunity to end the suffering of his people.” Drawing inspiration from the tale, Arcega creates an abstract representation of Rabbi Wolf Kitzes’ choice.

Gallery Chat: Artist Julia Goodman on her installation inspired by "The Bird of Happiness"

Goodman’s hanging paper installation is inspired by the final scene in the tale “The Bird of Happiness.” This scene reveals the young king’s daily ritual of spending an hour inside of a shack, dressed in the rags he grew up in, looking at his reflection in a mirror. During this hour, the king looks back on where he came from in order to move his kingdom forward.
